WP Super Edit 2.2 is now available for WordPress 2.8. I don’t know how I got this working so quickly. I’m always too busy!

WP Super Edit 2.2 has only been tested with WordPress 2.8. There are no new features at this time. I focused on some bug fixes and optimizations. I’ve done a quick cleanup and hopefully I’ve fixed some issues that made things more troublesome for some folks. Thanks vituko!

Since this plugin is dependant on WordPress and the TinyMCE editor, it makes it virtually impossible to maintain backwards compatiblity. I did backport one of the suggested fixes to WP Super Edit 2.1, so if you are still using WordPress 2.7 you might try downloading that version from the Older Versions area at WordPress.org.

I’ve been doing theme work lately, so the contact form for this site is broken. Please leave your comments here for issues or suggestions!

This is a minor, yet major update for WP Super Edit. Mostly this version fixes a nasty oversight on my part and updates the plugin for better compatibility with the upcoming release of WordPress 2.7.

I also added Font Tools as WP Super Edit plugin instead of adding the Font Face and Font Size drop down menus to the basic list of TinyMCE options. After you update WP Super Edit, you can use the Rescan tinymce_plugins Folder option and have access to the Font Tools plugin. I have to keep this one separate so I can keep those menus out reach for my users.

I had to change the TinyMCE settings scanning that is done during installation since WordPress 2.7 changes the editor initialization. It really should not matter too much, and it is mostly designed as a method to capture other TinyMCE plugins that might be installed. Someday I would love to make it possible to add options to control the editor options added by other plugins, but that will be really complicated for sure.

Please feel free to leave any issues as a comment here.

I’ve completed an update to my silly Yank Widget WordPress Plugin.

This release includes some minor bug fixes and hopefully some optimizations.

Yank Widgets should be more optimized. The plugin checks for pages added to Yank Widget areas on each post or page before trying to query the database for pages added to a Yank Widget sidebar area.

The widget container will not show without page content for all posts and pages unless you set the widget to always show the container in the widget settings.

Multipage pages using nextpage that are used in Yank Widget areas will now only show a “Read More” link that will direct the visitors to the second page.

As usual, if please leave a comment or send me a note if you find any issues! If you find this strange plugin useful, please consider making a donation or other contribution!

WP Super Edit 2.0 has finally been released!

It should probably also be known as the “Gustav ate my wallet” release. If you don’t know, WP Super Edit is a WordPress plugin designed to manage and add features to the TinyMCE WYSIWYG editor used by WordPress.

This is a complete rewrite of WP Super Edit for WordPress 2.6 or higher that I have been working on for months! It has been tested using WordPress 2.6 and 2.7 on PHP4 and PHP5 installations. I won’t go into too much detail about this release here. If you what to know more, please visit the WP Super Edit Project where you will find more information and detailed documentation.

New features for this release include:

Different modes for editor settings; One editor setting for all users, role based editor settings, and individual user editor settings.

Upgraded plugins for the 3.x version of TinyMCE.

Complete rewrite of WP Super Edit for stability and usability. All settings are now stored in the database, but most of the features of the original plugin remain.

Please leave comments here about issues or kudos for this version of WP Super Edit. If you want help out in other ways, please consider making a donation or other contribution. I did not suffer major damage from hurricanes Gustav and Ike so far, but evacuation costs and minor damages have put a major delay in my need to replace my aging Powerbook G4.

Most of all, have fun!

Update! – WP Super Edit 2.0.3 It’s been a really bumpy update! Some silly issues with roles and individual user settings fixed! Updates to fix javascipt errors with superemotions and superclass plugins.

Update! – WP Super Edit 2.0.4 Just trying to catch the changes as they happen for WordPress 2.7. Some proper methods to add the option pages. Killed the nag notice for user editor options and renamed per-user options menu and title to Visual Editor Options.

Update! – WP Super Edit 2.0.5 Another update for WordPress 2.7. I also made some minor changes to make WP Super Edit fail a little nicer if there are problems.

Update! – WP Super Edit 2.0.6 Joy! Removed extra line endings in php files. Possible issue noted by George Coghill.

Okay, time to start some collections of notes for WordPress 2.6.

First, covering the new self discovery of WordPress Plugin directories and wp-config locations:

What Plugin Coders Must Know About WordPress 2.6 « planetOzh

I haven’t found information on development with post revisions. I had one issue with the new revision system creating multiple entries for a plugin I have been working on, and I found it easy to disable. I use this snippet to bail out of the current action on the post if it is marked as a revision.

if ( function_exists( 'wp_is_post_revision' ) ) {
    if ( wp_is_post_revision( $post_ID ) != false )
        return $post_ID;
}

The revision system looks cool so far, and it would be more appropriate to have my plugin hook into those revisions. I’ll have to save that for later.

Good news is that I MUST start work again on WP Super Edit for WordPress 2.5. I have clients and users dependent on it like junkies, and I really want to move on to WordPress 2.5.

Bad news is that life has been beating the crap out of us lately:

Car troubles

Too much work to do

Keeping the aging PowerBook G4 hacked together so I can work. The damn power cable connection on the power module has been re-soldered three times. If you had one of these beasts before the fancy magno-power-cable-connector for the intel Macbooks then you probably have felt my pain.

New carpet for our bedroom. NOTE: a missing room in a small house brings things closer together — or just plain crowded.

And the terrible loss of a family member. My wife’s cat, Shai, who passed away because of cancer after 3 months of vets and internal medicine specialists charging us big bucks trying to figure out his problem. Shai was Caidy’s best friend who was the most stable member of this zoo.

I won’t mention the price of gas or the recession. Anyway, I’ll stop my whining! I know very well there are folks dealing with worse. Besides there were some good things; I went to an An Event Apart down the road in New Orleans, and this weekend I plan to be drunk in the woods of north-central Arkansas.

Development for WP Super Edit is done in the WP Super Edit trunk of the WordPress Extend subversion repository. It is not functional right now, but much of the database work, TinyMCE discovery functions, and other under the hood stuff is being worked on.

Most of the original features will be retained, but the complicated part is moving settings to the WordPress database. I want to focus on user and/or role configurations for the editor. The original version used flat files for configuration and I knew then it was a bad idea. WP Super Edit will also be using jQuery UI, and I want to use more of the javascript built in to WordPress as possible.

I should also note that WP Super Edit may not be able to upgrade from previous versions, but I think I will try to at least remove the old settings so I won’t be guilty of leaving old junk in the WordPress database.

Please remember, WP Super Edit is a complicated mess of PHP, SQL, HTML, CSS, and Javascript code. I don’t pretend to be an expert, and I do accept patches and suggestions. You can post comments here, use the contact form, or check factory.funroe.net for the occasional and rare updates. OH, and I better mention the contribute! page since I’ll probably have to replace that damn PowerBook sooner than I want.

This will probably be the last version of WP Super Edit for WordPress 2.1 to 2.3 since the upcoming WordPress 2.5 will dramatically change the editor. I’ll be starting to work on WP Super Edit 2.0 soon for WordPress 2.5 ( I’ll be using the WordPress Plugin Directory SVN from now on, so I need to get the Google Code project taken down.)

Here’s a quick list of the changes for WP Super Edit that were based on e-mail bug reports, some notes, and things that bothered me. I won’t bore you with too many details…

Things Completed!

changing …bloginfo(‘url’) to …bloginfo(‘WPurl’)

fix initialization errors

Simplify compatibility checks

Add WordPress “Next Page” tag button. – Denis Hoffmann

Fix “whered my button go bug” – reproduce. Activate editor plugin, move plugin button to row. Save. uncheck plugin. save. Now the next button on the row that had the removed plugin button will disappear until you refresh the whole damn interface.

Add FULLSCREEN button

Add HR button – Jake

WP Super Edit will now retain settings between plugin activation and deactivation.

Added an “uninstall” option that will delete the settings and deactivate the plugin.

Upgrade Notes

There shouldn’t be any major issues with replacing the superedit plugin folder on your site with this update. If things do start getting weird, use the “Uninstall” button, and reactivate the plugin. That should set everything back to the default state.

As always, your comments are welcome!
