My friends finally got me to show up for the annual get together. This year we all spent a great weekend at the Albert Pike Recreation Area in the Ouchita National Forest located in south west Arkansas just north of Texarkana. Click the album image to the right for full set of photos, and I’m putting some instructions at the end of this so my peeps can select and download an archive of pictures.

Camping is an enjoyable way to relax and make a contribution to nature, like:

Help Further the Evolution of the Buzzard

Flock of Buzzards vs. Dodge Ram 1500

Ryan made sure that at least two buzzards won’t be passing on the — slow to react gene. At least 10 of the stupid brids, probably the American Black Vulture, found that they were no match against a Dodge Ram 1500 doing about 70 mph. Whatever they were eating could not have been that good. Ryan will of course be visiting the body shop to repair the small buzzard head shaped dent above his window. Besides it left pretty wing-print on the windshield.

Snake Get’s Pissed and Climbs Tree - 2

Survive in the Harsh Wilderness

So the wilderness is still there along with all the ticks, snakes, and raccoons. Amy has the best pictures of the raccoon. However the coons did cart off almost two pounds of sandwich meat, some marshmellows, and a couple Hershey bars, but no beer.

Beer does make wilderness survival easier because you can ignore the insect bites including ticks that are snacking on you.

See People from Your Forgotten Past

Only I would go to the middle of nowhere to a place where you have to drive 15 minutes to get cellphone reception and run into somebody I know. I saw Michelle Monday (maiden name), a roomate after college. I didn’t talk to her because of issues from the place where we worked in Monroe, but I survived that so I probably should have at least said “hi.”

Pictures for My Peeps

Okay, so I have all these photos online and I hope my fellow campers can get to them. Here is how you can download a ZIP archive of original photos:

Visit the Photo Album at http://funroe.net/gallery/v/albert_pike_2008/.

At the top to the right of “Jess Camping 2008″ select “Add Album to Cart” from the drop-down menu.

Once you see the cart, you can remove items by checking the “Remove” check boxes and selecting “Update Quantities” from the “Cart Actions” drop-down at the top. You can also set the “Quantity” to 0 and select “Update Quantities.” Remember to press the “Go” button.

After you have a list of photos you want, select “Download in ZIP” from the “Cart Actions” and press the “Go” button. It should download a ZIP archive with all the photos.

If that doesn’t work for you, call me or e-mail and I’ll get you the pictures.

Today was the launch of blogs.pi.edu. Is anything sacred? Will .EDU loose that recognition like .ORG did? They say:

Run Your Own EDU Blog - “PI.edu is now offering sub-domain blogs that will allow you to educate your potential customers on your field of expertise. Why PI.edu? Our blogs allow you to reach an education minded audience that is difficult to reach with mass market blogs such as Blogger or Blogspot.”

All that for for the low price of $50.00 a month! Now they do say they will have some sort of “restrictions,” but that statement above pretty much says have a splog site here. Now I’ve seen some accidental splogs under .EDU, and I’ve seen some questionable .EDU domains. Since everyone watched the slow demise of .ORG it doesn’t surprise me that the venerable, restricted .EDU would start getting chipped at.

Okay, but it could be very bad considering that EDUCAUSE Amendment (6) part 1 - subpart 4 (PDF) says something like:

“No name registered in .EDU domain may be intentionally deployed to identify any organization other than the Registrant itself…”

BUT it continues on to say

“… while ANYNAME.REGISTRANT.EDU has no such limitation.”

Also check out the EDUCASE policy itself.

I couldn’t find anything to counter the possiblity that this could become a splog gateway into the .EDU namespace. I do know from that messages passed through UDWEB that EDUCUASE is already getting calls about it.

Ouch.

[Update] Shut down blogs.pi.edu by ZDNet’s Christopher Dawson — A newly-launched site called blogs.pi.edu is happy to sell you your own blog with a .edu domain for the low low price of $50. California 2008

We got back from San Diego a couple of weeks ago, and of course the vacation wore off quick.
It was a blast with a wonderful stay at Caidy’s parents’ house. We visited Universal Studios Hollywood, Julian, La Jolla, and some fun sight seeing around San Diego.
